Chapter Seven The Worst Practice

Tuesday morning arrived, and all I wanted to do was stay in bed. I thought about going for a run, but it seemed like it was the hardest thing to do, even though it was a bright clear day, and the temperature was perfect for being outdoors.

When I had snoozed my alarm clock for the third time and couldn’t delay any longer, I finally dragged myself out of bed and got ready for school.

“Want some breakfast?” Dad asked when I trudged downstairs and to the kitchen.

He was whisking eggs in a metal bowl, with the egg carton next to him. Next to him was a mug of coffee.

“Sure.”

I breathed in the comforting scents. I don’t like how bitter coffee tastes, but I do like the way it smells.

Dad cracked two more eggs into the bowl and stirred them up. Then he tipped the contents into a frying pan and began to cook the eggs over the stove with a wooden spatula.

“Sleep okay, Molly?” he asked as he worked on our breakfast.

“Not really.” I dropped on the stool at the breakfast bar next to him and rubbed my eyes. “I had a bad dream, and it kept me up all night.”

Dad took out two plates. He scraped the eggs onto them and put the frying pan in the sink.

“What was it about?” he asked as he got ketchup out of the fridge.

Out of all my family members, I feel like I can confide in my dad the most. But even though we’re really close, I hesitated.

Dad is great when I’m working through my feelings about Kelsey, or Jenna, or being adopted as a baby, but I’d never had a conversation with him that had to do with the way I felt about my body.

“It’s kind of personal and uncomfortable,” I told him. “But I’ll tell you if you want.”

“That’s what I’m here for.” Dad passed me the ketchup and poured me a glass of orange juice while I squirted a long, red squiggly line over my eggs.

As we sat and ate, I told him about my nightmare. Then came the hard part. Dad, of course, wanted to know who Jodie was. I had to relive her words to me in the mall and at the clothing drive all over again when I told him about it.

It wasn’t fun at all, but somehow I felt a little bit better now that Dad knew what was bothering me.

When I was done explaining, he took a sip of coffee from his mug, then set it down.

“Was the Jodie in your dream Jodie Perkins?”

I nodded, surprised. “How did you know?”

“I went to college with her parents. I was mostly friends with Jodie’s dad, Bobby, but I got to know her mom, Caroline, because they were dating at the time.”

Dad looked at me, his eyes a lot more serious than usual. “She was the star soccer player on the team, but she broke her leg sliding into another player in the championship game my senior year.
